EATING OUT

Believe it or not there are over 180 restaurants in Kalkan. Most of them are quite small and cosy and are invariably situated on roof terraces with sea views.  Restaurants on the harbour are fabulous but tend to be more expensive, probably due to their unique setting.  Wherever you eat in Kalkan you can be assured of very friendly and attentive service.

Mostly the food is excellent and generally it is cheap (by English standards) to have a good meal out. The more expensive restaurants are superb.

Our firm family favourite is the Kaya.  This is owned by Erol and Kadir, who will make you extremely welcome and even entertain you with great magic tricks! (Kadir is a member of the Magic Circle)  Although it is not in the Old Town and does not have a sea view it is still a lovely place for a meal. The food is excellent and very reasonably priced.

If you want a really cheap Turkish meal, try the Ali Baba. This is situated on the upper "bricked" road near the bank.  Also on this road  is The Odak, which is on the terrace above the Ali Baba, This does not have a sea view and is in the upper part of town but it is very reasonably priced and the food is delicious.

A typical example of a cheap dinner can be found at the Kaptan restaurant.  This lovely little eatery is situated at the far end of the village, perched above the sea and here we had a meal for two for about £16 which consisted of aubergine salad, followed by a Turkish pizza, a shish kebab, beers, coffee and brandies.

Another good restaurant is The Sofra, which has a roof terrace with views over the Med, and serves lovely food.

If you want a special meal, then you can’t beat The Aubergine.  This lovely restaurant is on the harbour front and is idyllic.  You will have to book for a table, especially if you want to eat in the open air area. The steaks were recommended and we were not disappointed, simply delicious!    Expensive by Turkish standards, but worth every penny!

If you hire a car you can drive into the hills above Kalkan to the small village of Islamlar where there are a number of restaurants serving of freshly caught trout from their farms for 5YTL each (about £1.75 in Aug 06).  Delicious!
